Cafe Nero - Vegan Apple and Blackcurrant Crumble

Cafe Nero now offer is this little Apple and Blackcurrant crumble bar as part of their [small but growing]
Vegan range.

On the packet the bar is described as a “cinnamon spiced based layer with apple and blackcurrant filling topped with an oat crumble” which sounds pretty nice.

Taking the bar out of the wrapper I was surprised at how firm it was, I expected it to be quite moist
and for a better term, floppy.

But the bar held together really well even when pulled in half. The 3 layers of the cinnamon base,
apple and blackcurrant filling (let's called it a jam) and the oat topping are all distinctive and of equal
measure.

Taking my first bite you get an overwhelming taste of cinnamon from the base before a mild
sweetness of apple comes through. The blackcurrant seems to get lost and I think this is due to the
combination of the cinnamon and apple which go together so well.

There is a slight stickiness to the whole bar that is left in your mouth and that is down to the oats as
they come apart easily when chewing and add a slightly different texture.

There is an after taste of the sweet apple and cinnamon which is quite nice and warming and
reminds me a little of winter and christmas.

So what is there not too like about this? Well very little unless you’re a calorie counter. 237 in this one bar and a whopping 21.1g of sugar, quite a lot for a bar that is under 100g. As for the sugar it’s not stated how much of that is added and how much is natural from the blackcurrant and apples.

Overwall I wouldn’t say no having another one, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy one either.

Tesco Wicked Kitchen - Smashin’ Pumpkin Falafel sandwich

Gone are the boring greys and greens of salads most people think vegans eat and in comes and exciting line of foods produced in conjunction with Tesco and Wicked Healthy comes the Wicked Kitchen range of ready meals, sandwiches, pizzas and salad bowls. So for my lunch today I’m trying the Smashin’ Pumpkin Falafel sandwich which is describe as “Pumpkin and chilli falafel with pickled vegetables, roasted red pepper hummus, with a punchy harissa dressing*. Pun worthy name aside, what really hits you when you first set eye upon this sandwich is its vibrant colours. The orangery hummus and dressing, green of the spinach and purple of the cabbage are all very attractive and lure you in, much like the rest of the Wicked Kitchen line. So what’s it taste like? Amazing is what! The harissa dressing is sweet but punchy which really helps round out the heat which comes from the soft falafel. The cabbage gives the sandwich much needed crunch and texture. ...
